My first ever official Teachers Day! :D Heres remembering all those teachers who inspired me and taught me that being a teacher means so much more than just pushing your kids through pre-primary/primary/secondary/higher school/college/a job. So many of you have pushed me to think on a tangent I never even believed existed, and a lot of you didnt force me to think differently but simply left it for me to decide...and that made all the difference. The best thing about me is that I am a work-in-progress, and different kinds of teachers helped me realize that it was a good thing. We have so much power in our hands it frightens me sometimes. We have the power to inspire, or to demotivate. We have the power to either open our kids eyes to fascinating new things or to make those same wonderful things sound like boring factoids theyll be forced to mug up. We have the power to make our students believe in either asking questions, or in merely giving answers. We have the power to help a child who thinks I cannot draw and I have no imagination believe that their one squiggle is a masterpiece, because it is. There will be times were happy we gave those 5-10 children an opportunity to believe in their potential. There will be times we will regret not being able to give adequately to every single child we have but hey, we can still find spaces to do exactly that to the children we missed: whether its a few minutes snatched during lunch hour, or during times when the kids are doing their independent learning, or during those little moments when we engage the kids in small talk. Because as someone once told me, we may come up with the best lesson plans and plan our day to the minutest detail, but what the kids will remember most is how we made them *feel*. Im still learning to be a teacher, and now its my students who teach me how. Every day.
