My friend and colleague Michael A. Murray writes on his timeline: This is fascinating. While the Met is on the verge of bankruptcy, European companies are on a financial roll with no shortage of younger audiences. Hmm, might part of the problem in the USA be in its music education agenda? I in turn responded: The problem is precisely the music education agenda. Too much emphasize on mindless education and not much emphasis at all in teaching people to listen, to listen to lots of different music, or how to connect with music and not performers. To turn our backs on the art of opera (or symphony concerts, etc.) would be like turning off the lights in the Louvre and boarding up all the doors. No one would allow that. Time to get real.
