My lord & your lordship I Just read about some one approaching the Apex court against this tradition of addressing the Judges. His claim it amounts to slavery . Tell me who does not like to be called so. It is reported, this gentleman further submitted in the court that only Rama & Krishna are his Lords. I do not know what made him think so. I am sure these words & traditions were introduced by the British during the pre Independence period. At that time we were addressing British judges & Britishers thought they were lords(they wanted it that way). Unfortunately We do not believe in changing traditions & so we continued with the same.It is a fact that The judges do not expect this privileged these days, any more. I learnt it is a decided matter few years ago by the lawyers themselves(bar council of India in year 2006)!!! It is likely that out of habit Lawyers continue to repeat these words. What is wrong in this? I do not mind referring a honest person ( be it a judge / a common man) with these special words. What I did not understand is why this man chose Rama &Krishna only for this privilege? The dictionary meaning of Lord -- a man of noble rank / high office,a nobleman & the dictionary meaning of lord ship---supreme power/rule. If we have go by these meanings , then we should be addressing judges as lordship as they do have supreme power(we do not have rulers anymore). We may have to refer to many as lord as the ambit of meaning of this word is very wide. When the Apex court is so busy with so many serious matters, is it not silly to waste time on such silly matter( i blame the petitioner)? The sad part about our legal system is however silly the matter is,courts have to stick to the procedure & then pass a elaborate order clarifying all doubts.Courts cannot generally say point blank sorry ,get lost(It does happen rarely).Every one is given equal oppurtunity to prove his point, but that takes time &man power is wasted !! The trend of imposing cost (fine) for wasting courts time is catching up .I hope this process wil intensify in years to come. I hope this man is fined.Let us have seriuos matters coming up before our courts & not trouble the Apex court for petty issues which are already accepted !!
