My most memorable Christmas gift ever. As most of you know, the stuff I post on here is either my magic or hopefully funny. One of my family members loves this story, and asked me to share it. Ive posted it on here before, but if you havent read it, Ill share it again. I had just turned 12 and was in the 6th grade. Nicholasville Elementary was in its first year of integration. As was the tradition back then, we all drew names for our Christmas party. A new black student, Charlie Richardson proudly told me he had drawn my name. I was not expecting much of a gift as I thought Charlie was less fortunate than I was. On the last day of school before the break, he handed me a large brown manila envelope. I opened the envelope and there were all sorts of goodies. There was a ruler from the Stratton Lumber Co., a nail clipper from Jessamine First Federal Savings, a fan from the local funeral home, a handkerchief from a local bank, and even a tape measure from another store. There was a shoe horn from Swindlers Shoe Store, and a pen imprinted with Western Auto. I also got a pencil from Firestone, and a paperweight from The First National Bank. I even recall a calendar from The Farmers Bank. At the time, I wasnt very impressed, but my mom had taught me well. I acted like I was pleased, and thanked Charlie for the gifts. I didnt really think much more about it until I had children of my own. One day I asked one of them to name three things they had received for Christmas the previous year. Naturally they couldnt recall. I thought back and remembered the gifts that Charlie had given me. I couldnt remember much else, I had gotten when I was a child, but I remembered that a young black child had walked all over town, in the cold, just so he could give me a Christmas present. He had gone to several businesses and gotten free stuff, because he couldnt afford to buy anything. Wow, what a gift to me that I still remember from 50 years ago. There are a few special toys and magic tricks, that Ill always remember, but nothing quite like the gifts Charlie Richardson gave me so long ago!
