My previous post upset some very good people and I would like to rectify that. There are Ethical Breeders out in the community who breed to; Keep the breed going Better the breed and breed out health or skeletal problems Insure the the best of the breed is available This does not mean that cross breeds are not as good as pure breeds. Many breeds available today, including Amstaffs, Pit Bulls, British Bull Dogs, Labradoodles were at one time a cross breed, along with many other Pure breeds. Inbred Cross breeds are not good, and sadly many of the backyard breeders do not have the intelligence to understand that you cannot put brother over sister after their mum and dad were brother and sister. Sadly there are unethical NZKC registered breeders too, just as there are unethical rescues, unethical pounds and unethical spcas. It is hard to know which is ethical and which isnt. I have no issue with anyone adopting a purebreed, I have even owned pedigree Shepherds. One was perfect, and I loved him more than life itself. When he left us we got one from a bad breeder who we didnt realise was using a dam that had to be locked in a horse float because she was too dangerous to allow out. Of course we were not shown her, they had a different dam on display the day we went in to choose Khan. Our next Shepherd was a beautiful girl but profoundly deaf, this was not the fault of the breeder as much as it was a bad sire that they had not been given a full history on. I have a wonderful much loved friend who breeds Labradors, and they are beautiful even thought I personally found labradors rather boring until I met hers. What would be very useful would be a list of breeders that other breeders agree are ethical and have only the highest standards so those that wish to adopt a purebreed can, safe in the knowledge that their pup was bred for the right reasons in the right way. There is no such thing as a good backyard breeder.
