My response to this article on hell: ow.ly/BSKn2 I sympathize with your interest in getting rid of the doctrine of hell. Who wants to believe in a place of eternal suffering? Why would you? As an anti-theist, your belief system is not in line with traditional Christianity. According to Christianity, the denial of Jesus as raised from the dead and Lord of your life would put you on a path toward the lake of fire. Its easy to roll your eyes and deny any answer for God. But the question remains, who gets to set the rules? I could deny the existence of grass or trees or planets or stars all I want. But despite my passionate denial, it would remain to be true. Truth exists outside of ourselves. Hell is never a comfortable discussion. But the question is, does it exist? Has there ever been a reason to believe it is so? The historical resurrection of Jesus points to eternal spiritual truths we must confront. My suspicion from your article is that you would consider the resurrection of Jesus to be legend. But isnt that cherry-picking a part of the story you dont like? Since we know that dead people die and stay dead, resurrection has to come from a source that exists beyond natural law. The most reasonable explanation is that the God who exists in real reality chose to align Himself with Jesus of Nazareth. He displayed that to humanity through the resurrection. That puts everything that Jesus said of Himself at extreme importance. The resurrection of Jesus makes a divine statement: There is a spiritual reality humanity must come to grips with. While hell sounds terrible (and it should), it is not a product of divine choice. Hell is a product of human choice. Man has decided to distance themselves from God. Hell is Gods response to human choice: I will give you what you want. You might say, I dont want darkness and agony for eternity! Of course you dont. But existing apart from God, what else could there be? If God is the source of life, being apart from Him creates a disorder in the soul of a human being. God created humanity to be with Him. Apart from Him is apart from the way God created us to be. That eternal disorder manifests itself in the ugly perversion of existence the human desired. Jesus is not a source of religion. He is a source of life. Apart from Him there is no hope for mankind. Because like it or not, God does not exist to please you. He is not your fairy godmother. God just is. And He will let you decide: With Him or without?
