My son is Autistic, brilliant but Autistic. There are so many - TopicsExpress

My son is Autistic, brilliant but Autistic. There are so many misconceptions about Autism it is untrue! He is top of his class in most subjects, but finds some lessons difficult, particularly when it is noisy and he has to concentrate on writing. We have spent most of his school life trying to get the authorities to accept his condition, fortunately we now have a statement acknowledging his condition. This is something we thought might help with his education, but unfortunately has had an adverse impact at school. He does find the classroom environment difficult when he needs to sit a test, mainly due to the noise. He has been given the option to leave the classroom in the past, and take the test in the Purple Room, as it is known at his school, but that has now been removed since he has received his statement. It seems quite obvious to us that Parklands Junior school do not value students that are different, no matter how inelegant. Yes, he has caused a lot of problems in the past, mainly due to the fact that they did not accept his condition, publicly yes, but by their actions, no. A certain individual, whom will remain anonymous, is mostly responsible for this. She has obviously failed to meet the requirements set out in the parents forum and has decided to remove all problematic students to meet her remit. Ben being the most easy and obvious subject. I am not claiming that my son is always easy to deal with, but he has such rich potential, it seems scandalous to throw him on the scrap heap of underachievement just to keep the school happy, or most importantly, this heinous woman in a job. We have now taken legal representation as a last resort. We have been told by the local authority to make our mind up ASAP, regarding which school we send Ben to, even though it is stated within government policy that the parents of autistic children have the right to choose an appropriate school. To all parents of autistic children let this be a lesson to you. Fight for your childrens rights and do not let league tables and an individuals career prospects get in their way. More to follow... the fight goes on...
