My stepdad was a tough hombre. Baldemar Robert Garcia Guerrero was an MP in the Army, a well-groomed, every-hair-in-place, physically fit man who would just as soon kick your ass and make you wish you were dead as look at you. Though he loathed the military for drafting him, Bob adopted some of its traits for life. I cried at my desk at the Ypsilanti Press when Bob died unexpectedly in 1989. What I liked about Bob is that he followed the Donald Trump rule of to do a job, you dont have to be asked. Bob taught me this dont wait to be asked behavior through example and as a boy of 13 to 18 in his and my moms house I had a quiet hunger to please my parents that was never satisfied. I rebelled often, especially when they said you only do something if you want to do it. I wanted to say, Who doesnt? Ha ha. His hard and fast rule of doing something before you are asked to do it is a valuable lesson I will never forget. I have applied it repeatedly Most employers value a go-getter and someone who does what obviously needs to be done without being asked shows initiative --- another trait I learned hard core from Bob. Bob also had a bad temper. He was cantankerous and he made me the same way. It was always in my best interest to pay attention. Why I learned this go-get-em rule is unimportant. The fact that I did learn it so it became second nature is what matters. Bob is in Heaven now. I hope he has Facebook up there and can read this so he knows I appreciate what he taught me.
