NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF CHOIRS 26th ANNUAL CONFERENCE GALA CONCERT IN SCARBOROUGH SATURDAY 5th APRIL 2014 WITH SPECIAL GUEST APPEARANCE OF CELEBRITY MANVINDER RATTAN Some 200 singers from seven of the very best choirs from East and North Yorkshire will descend upon Westborough Methodist Church in Scarborough on the evening of Saturday 5th April 2014 to participate in a Gala Conference that will benefit Marie Curie Cancer Care. The concert has been arranged by Co-Ordinator Terry Wallis in conjunction with the 86th Annual General Meeting and 26th Annual Conference Weekend of the National Association of Choirs (NAC) which holds its annual three-day conference in a different area of the UK each year so that every member choir has the opportunity to send their representatives to the event without having to travel too far. Says Concert Co-Ordinator and Compere Terry Wallis who lives at Marton, near Kirkbymoorside and who is Assistant Musical Director and Public Relations Officer of Hull Male Voice Choir: The NAC is an organisation run by volunteer officers with the aim of promoting choral music across the UK and its membership is growing rapidly, with current numbers in excess of 600 choirs all around the UK. We are delighted that this National Conference has been brought to Scarborough this year: it will be taking place over 4-6 April 2014 at The Crown Spa Hotel on Scarborough’s Esplanade which has panoramic views across the North Sea although the Gala Concert will be held in the impressive Westborough Methodist Church. This is going to be a fantastic concert that will be the highlight of the Conference Weekend and showcases seven of the best choirs from within the area that will comprise Beverley Male Voice Choir, Cadenza (from The Wolds), Hull Male Voice Choir, Hull Ladies Choir, Malton & District Male Voice Choir, North Ferriby Ladies Choir and the Staxton Singers from Scarborough – all of whom are members of the National Association of Choirs and who will perform a wide variety of musical items as individual participating choirs as well as singing as a mass ladies choir and a mass male voice choir. Items will include an excerpt from “Les Miserables” to “The Rose” and “Hail Holy Queen from Sister Act” to “Anthem from Chess” and “Is This The Way to Amarilloa” as well as Rutter’s “A Choral Amen” plus many more ! The Concert will conclude with Handel’s “Hallelujah Chorus” performed by all 200 choristers plus delegates from the Conference – and this after a surprise item that will be presented by distinguished conductor Manvinder Rattan who is the Musical Director of the John Lewis Partnership Music Society and who will have delivered a singing workshop to conference delegates during the afternoon prior to the concert. Having completed his training as a choral conductor with Sing for Pleasure, Manvinder joined the charity’s tutor team and assumed the role of Head of Conductor Training in 2006 and last year Sing for Pleasure taught over 250 conductors on a nationally accredited training scheme. . Manvinder will bring much to both the Conference and our Gala Concert – it will be recalled that in 2012, Manvinder was invited to join Gareth Malone to film a series of The Choir, that time working on singing in the workplace, with Manvinder as a judge in the series which was broadcast in September 2012 on BBC2. Advance tickets at price £8 each for the Gala Concert – which commences at 7pm at Westborough Methodist Church - are available now from Scarborough Music Centre, Scarborough Tourist Information Centres, Westborough Methodist Church and by calling 01751 432811 – tickets will also be available on the door (subject to availability).
