NEED ADVICE FROM VETERAN RUNNERS - PLEASE HELP Im 58 (175cms) and weigh around 100kgs (220 pounds). I used to Power-Lifter / Body Builder but because of wear / tear of joints, I stopped exercise for 6 years. I am currently a Barefoot Runner who has been running now for 14 months. My 21km best is 2hours 45mins. Currently, I am on a quest to lose weight. I am at 93kgs. My goal is to bring it down to 70kgs at least. But it will be hard because of all the thick muscle I carry around and the huge deposits of fat - which are unlike normal fat deposits - harder to lose. My biggest problem is this. I see Fast Runner - Veteran Runners (Kenyans and Africans who run 21km in 59minutes or less). I see their strides. Their ankles literally bend backwards and touch their buttocks when they run. Their flexibility is amazing. My question is this. 1) I always fatigue towards the end of the race (last 3 kms). Even if I want to sprint - I am unable as my thighs, calves & upper body are super sore. What can I do to solve this problem? 2) What Exercises in the gym should I do to strengthen my core apart from Planks, Squats & Abdominal Exercises? Is there any other exercise you suggest to increase speed, endurance & stamina? 3) Are there websites which have links of exercises to be done? (I went through some websites - the exercises they give are so weird / complicated - you just get over whelmed thinking about them) 4) Are there are any videos on youtube you suggest? 5) What are the best exercises for preventive measures for running? 6) Finally - is there anyone among you who can act as a Mentor / Guide if I would need guidance? Would really appreciate your input on this. If it is not too much of a bother - may I also request you to send me an email also with your answers on loy@loymachedo ? Thank you. Loy Machedo - A Slow Barefoot Runner.
