NEFL Premier Reserve Parkvilla 1-1 Muirhevnamor Second in the table Muirhevnamor were in a confident mood for this clash at Claremont Stadium on Saturday evening but they were more than pleased to head back to the Wee County with a share of the spoils after the ninety minutes. Following a tense, goal-less first half that saw both sides cancel each other out it was the home side that nearly made the breakthrough following a great passage of play. A smart move out from the back initiated by Jamie Coogan found Andy Williamson, who’s brilliant through ball sent Glen Connolly racing down the touchline and his superb cross was met by the diving Ger Lynch but the visiting custodian somehow got across to make a magnificent save. The Louth side then applied a lot of pressure on the home goal but Eoghan Prior was in great form between the posts. However, there was little he could do to prevent the visitors going ahead with an unstoppable shot. The Commons Road outfit then showed great character by laying siege to their opponent’s goal and their efforts paid off with a smashing equaliser with time running out. They forced a number of corners and when the league contenders failed to clear one properly Jamie Coogan sent a thundering drive to the net from the edge of the penalty area for a well deserved leveller. A draw was a fair result in a fiercely competitive and very skilful match well controlled by referee Mick Bryan. Best for Villa were: Ger Lynch, Andy Williamson, Stephen Trappe and Eoghan Prior. Team: Eoghan Prior, Sean Hughes, Jamie Coogan, Stephen Trappe, Jordan Keating, Glen Connolly, Mark Woods, Andy Williamson, Mide Adjedidim, Eric Dunne, Ger Lynch. Subs: Mick Hand for Keating, Paudge McLoughlin for Woods and Bambi Fasanya for Adjedidim. NECSL 14 Div 1 OMP A 1-0 Parkvilla B Parkvilla picked up where they left off with their superb brand of attacking football but unfortunately it was not to be their day as they came up against a resolute OMP defence. Several first half chances fell to Nevin, Hamilton and Matsie Mongan but they couldn’t convert them and the half time score remained scoreless with the home side rarely threatening their visitor’s goal. HT (0-0). The second half continued in the same pattern with Villa dictating the pace and more chances fell to Adewumni and Hamilton. From a Villa corner, OMP broke quickly and a rasping shot from their winger was brilliantly saved by Hyland and hit the bar and bounced down. The referee deemed the ball to be behind the line before Hyland gathered and OMP were gifted a lead, which they scarcely deserved. For the remaining 20 minutes this superb villa team showed grit, determination, character and no shortage of skill to lay siege to the OMP goal. Mongan egged on his teammates at every opportunity as they drove forward in waves. Several chances fell to Johnson, Adewumni, Hamilton, OGorman and Firenze but OMP must have had divine intervention to seal the win. The disappointment and disbelief on the Villa players faces that they had lost will spur them on in future games in what is turning out to be a very tight league. Best for Parkvilla: Matsie Mongan, David OGorman, Paddy Gaffney, and Quadri Adewumni. Team: Philip Hyland, Aibhen Casserly, Sean McCaughley, Jordan Geraghty, Jamie Grumley, Paddy Gaffney, David OGorman, Matsie Mongan, Quadri Adewunmi, Abdul Okunola, Nathan Hamilton. Subs: Noel Nevin, Patrick Russell, Cian ONeil, Adrian Kulon, Fisa Firenze, Michael Johnson, Eoin Grogan. 12 Div 1 Parkvilla 1 - 2 Kingscourt Harps It was back to football after the Christmas break and it was the visit of Kingscourt to Watters’ Lane today in this NECSL Division1 encounter. With the pitch in excellent condition, the game was all set for a tight game against these two sides. Blustery conditions faced both teams and with Villa kicking into the wind in the first half, the Navan side started the brightest. Good passing created a number of chances and the best of these came when Cian Clarke found himself free at the back post but unfortunately his shot was wide. Another chance came soon after that and a great strike from Adam Niven forced the visiting keeper into a great save. It was a ferocious battle in midfield with Ryan Brown and Shane Maguire making great challenges against a strong Kingscourt midfield. Good defending at the back by a solid back four of Jamie Ayres, Thomas Kerr, Kevin Fatoki and Tom Smyth kept the Cavan strikers out, along with some great sweeping up by Glenn Predergast in goals. With only a minute to play in the first half, the ball fell to the Harp’s striker who made no mistake and finished well to give his side a 1-0 lead at half time. The claret and blues had the wind in the second half and again started brightly. Good work down the right by Eoghan McCague and Christian Nicolenco resulted in the ball falling to Shane Maguire who struck a sweet strike with his left foot and found its way into the back of the net. At 1-1, Villa were back in the game. More good defending by Josh Ratty kept the Cavan lads out but it was a long ball through the middle that made its way through to the striker who took it calmly around Glenn Predergast and slotted it home to make it 2-1 to the visitors. The last 15 minutes of the game saw the Villa put the pressure on the opposition defence but they dealt well with every attack. The final whistle was blown and on another day Villa might have got something out of this game but well done to a good Harps team. Best for Villa were: Cian Clarke; Jamie Ayres; Thomas Kerr and Padraig Gallagher. Team: Glenn Prendergast, Jamie Ayres, Kevin Fatoki, Tom Smyth, Thomas Kerr, Shane Maguire, Christian Nicolenco, Cian Clarke, Ryan Brown, Padraig Gallagher, Adam Niven. Subs: Josh Ratty, Eoghan McCague, Godfred Sanka , David OConnor and Nathan Carton.
