NESPRESSO @ VUE DE MONDE An interesting invitation – Nespresso - TopicsExpress

NESPRESSO @ VUE DE MONDE An interesting invitation – Nespresso asking me to a coffee launch dinner at Vue de Monde. With an anniversary party and two other dinner events the same evening I’d be ungracious to turn down the best, but would it be coffee-flavoured dishes (shudder)? Surely Shannon and Corey wouldn’t do that to me. I tried the Nespresso Martini on offer but – OK, I’m really fussy, but I’ve got this thing about the degradation of coffee flavours (roasting beans, grinding, etc.) that stops me after coffee itself, and usually espresso or macchiato (the real thing, not some long coffee with too much milk) – it just didn’t do it for me. Thankfully the alternative was 2004 Moet Grand Vintage which I’m surprised more people didn’t pick up on; and trays of delicate hors d’oeuvres of smoked eel, truffle marshmallow, oyster wrap and salt-cured wallaby. Now I’m not sure where all the wallaby came from but it’s the third time since Saturday’s second loss to the All Blacks that I’ve been served wallaby ... perhaps there are changes for the next game. The two lovely mains – a “Duck, leek, Gascony” then an excellent “Barramundi, Crealto, potato, squid, mustard greens” that redeemed this far-too-often poor quality fish – seemed out of order, and certainly served with mismatched wines: chardonnay with duck then pinot with fish which did neither a favour, but worked well in reverse matching. Now Nespresso is served at larger functions at Vue when the coffee machine can’t cope. The new Crealto Grand Cru from Nespresso is a very decent cup of coffee. Even the coffee-Nazi in me had to fold on this for home (or any Vue de Monde function) coffee making.
