NEW NAVY SHIP BUILT IN MISSISSIPPI HEADED TO SAN DIEGOSAN DIEGO (CNS) – A new U.S. Navy… ift.tt/1kgnPLZ via John Currin – Google+ Public Posts ift.tt/1qSvjKY NEW NAVY SHIP BUILT IN MISSISSIPPI HEADED TO SAN DIEGOSAN DIEGO (CNS) – A new U.S. Navy amphibious assault ship departed Mississippi on Friday for San Diego, which will be its home port, Navy officials announced. The USS America set sail from Ingalls Shipbuilding in Pascagoula, where the ship was constructed and passed three major inspections by the Navy to be deemed ready to get underway for the first time. The Navy officially accepted delivery of the ship on April 10, and the America will be formally commissioned in San Francisco on Oct. 11, Navy officials said. Americas commanding officer, Capt. Robert Hall, Jr., told his crew today that what we do from this point forward will dictate the kind of ship Americas going to be, and Im excited to get out there and introduce her to the fleet. The 844-foot-long vessel is the first ship of its class, replacing the Tawara-class of amphibious assault ships, and is optimized for aircraft ranging from tilt-rotor aircraft to fighter jets. The ship is the fourth warship to be named for the United States of America and. over the next several months. will embark upon a mission called America Visits the Americas to engage in cooperative maritime security operations with partner nations, according to the Navy.
