NEWS UPDATES AT 7 O’CLOCK WITH ORANGE. The American government has expressed its commitment to continue supporting Uganda’s efforts to combat HIV/AIDS especially the prevention of Mother to Child Transmission of HIV/AIDS (PMTCT). The American Ambassador to Uganda, Scott Delissi who had paid a courtesy called on the First lady and minister for Karamoja affairs Janet Museveni at Nakasero state house conveyed the commitment. He said the global fund will continue supporting the prevention and treatment of HIV and AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria in Uganda. Delissi however said there was need for stakeholders in the fight against HIV/AIDs in Uganda to meet and Prioritize Critical areas for funding. The First lady thanked the American Embassy for supporting government in the various programmes. Cultural leaders in Amuru district in Acholi sub-region are considering allowing the Madhivan group of companies to grow sugar cane plantation in their area. The paramount chief of Lamogi sub-county in Amuru district Otinya Otuka Otto, said next month various cultural leaders from the region are expecting to meet President Museveni and Madhivan to discuss this issue. Otuka said this during a legal service training offered to people in Amuru by legal aid service providers network (LASPnet) and Action Aid Uganda. A fundraising drive dubbed “Uganda Martyrs Shrines redevelopment” will be launched today at Serena Hotel by President Museveni. 36 billion shillings is needed for the refurbishing and modernising of the Uganda Martyrs Shrines at Namugongo. The premier Amama Mbabazi who is also the chairperson of the committee tasked to raise the money said the initiative is intended to prepare the shrines for the Golden Jubilee celebrations earlier scheduled for October 18, but postponed until further notice. The Catholic Church in Uganda announced they had postponed the celebrations after the Pope, who was expected to preside over the function confirmed he was not able to make the trip. The celebrations are expected to attract the attendance of the Pope. Jihadists holding US journalist James Foley wanted a $132m (£80m) ransom for his release, his employer has said. Global Post CEO Philip Balboni said the Islamic State (IS) militants had first demanded money last year. Mr Foley was abducted in November 2012, and a video of his beheading was released by IS earlier this week. The US has begun a formal criminal investigation into Mr Foleys death, with the attorney general warning that the country has a long memory. Meanwhile, speaking at a press conference on Thursday, US Defence Secretary Chuck Hagel described IS as an imminent threat and beyond just a terrorist group.
