NO-BUDGET CREW…”PART 2”… MONEY-MONEY… (“You’re about to Shoot & Direct a Digital/HD/4K Feature on a Micro-Budget of $100K… Now, who do you hire & What do you pay?”) ….. (November 19, 2013) … $100,000. That’s the Bottom-Line. That’s how much money you can hustle to make, direct, shoot your first feature film via either Crowd Funding (Donation) or setting up an LLC and begging Friends & Relatives to buy one of 10 Units at $10,000 each for 5% of Profits…IF THERE ARE ANY. So, how you gonna spend the money? Who ya gonna hire? What you gonna pay? BOTTOM-LINE…. $100K 1st: Subtract $10,000 for 2 Film Festivals, Social Media & a Publicist when you’re done. $90K remains: 2nd: Subtract $5,000 for a weekend (3-Day) pickup (aka: Re-shoot) when you’re halfway into your edit and start saying “Damn you know what I should of done; or Sh*t I forgot to get; or Damn that actor s*cks gotta re-shoot” I promise you “it’s gonna happen so Budget-For-It. $85K remains: THE SHOOT: a 1-week Shoot (10-Shooting days). You say “How can you get 10 Shooting Days into one week? Simple: Camera rental facilities are not open on Weekends. Thus, make the deal for 2 basic 4K Reds, at $1,400/week, and pick up the Camera after 2:00 on Friday and keep it over 2 weekends, and return it 10 days later on Monday just before 10:00am, when they open. PIECE OF INFO: Don’t think that this is a secret and the Camera rental facility is giving you a good deal. They’re not. Why? Because they “Ain’t open on Saturday or Sunday. They don’t want you to return it on Saturday or Sunday. They’ll always say “keep it to the following Monday”….. 10-Days. SHOOT & SCHEDULE: You’re a 90-page Script, with a 10-Day (1-week) Shoot, with a Shooting Schedule of 9 pages/day and with 2 Reds shooting simultaneously with a Master & Close-up, or a Master & Medium, or 2 Reverse Angle Mediums this is not difficult to execute. Now let’s talk CREW: Who to Hire? What to Pay? (Pssss. Shhh. Remember, you’re only hiring people for 1-week and the less time you need them for them to get an Opening Title Credit on a Feature the less money you need to pay them. Plan a 4-5 week shoot and you’re paying big bucks. Plan a 2-3 week shoot and you’re paying more than working wages. Plan a 1-week shoot and you’re getting Crew on (1) Favors and (2) Minimum wage but make sure (3) you have good food on the set. CREW: DIRECTOR: It’s you & you ain’t paying yourself anything. What would you get paid to direct a short? ***** CREW ***** CINEMATOGRAPHER: $500 Prep (3-Days), $1,500 Shoot (1-Week) & $1,000 Post PRODUCTION MANAGER: $1,500 Prep (3-weeks @ $500/week) & $1,000 Shoot PRODUCTION DESIGNER: $1,500 Prep (3-weeks @ $500/week) & $750 Shoot SOUND MAN: $100 Prep, $1,500 Shoot GRIP/GAFFER: $1,000 Prep (2-weeks @ $500/week) & $1,000 Shoot PRDTN CRDNATOR: $1,600 Prep (4-weeks @ $400/week) & $1,000 Shoot/Post 5-7 Other Crew People hired by the above 6, with 4 PAs getting paid nothing. Anyway, again, BOTTOM-LINE: You got $85,000 left and the 6 above Keys will cost about $15,000. This is doable. Happy Shooting. 90-Pages, 1-Location. “Take 7 Kids to a House & Chop ‘em up”…. Now “do it uniquely different”.
