NT -- Tropical Cyclone Advice for TC Alessia -- UPDATE -- Blue alert TROPICAL CYCLONE WARNING TROPICAL CYCLONE ADVICE NUMBER 19 Issued at 4:57 am CST [3:27 am WST] on Sunday 24 November 2013 A Cyclone WARNING is current for coastal areas from Mitchell Plateau to Point Stuart, including Darwin and the Tiwi Islands.[corrected for Warning Zone] At 3:30 am CST [2:00 am WST] Tropical Cyclone Alessia, Category 1 was estimated to be 45 kilometres north northwest of Kalumburu and 505 kilometres west southwest of Darwin and moving east northeast at 16 kilometres per hour. Tropical Cyclone Alessia is a small system and moving close to the Kimberley coast. GALES with gusts to 95 kilometers per hour are currently affecting the north Kimberley coast, near Troughton Island, and are expected to extend to remaining parts of the northern Kimberley coast today. During today, this system is likely to approach the west coast of the Top End as a tropical low or weak tropical cyclone. GALES may develop late today or early on Monday between the WA/NT border and Point Stuart. In the Kimberley, rainfall from this system is likely to be confined to coastal areas with rainfall totals expected to be less than is typical with a tropical low or cyclone. Over the Top End, rain and storms with isolated heavy falls may lead to localised flooding as the system makes landfall and moves inland. DFES-State Emergency Service advises of the following community alerts: BLUE ALERT: People in or near communities between Mitchell Plateau and the WA/NT border, including Kalumburu and Wyndham, need to prepare for cyclonic weather and organise an emergency kit including first aid kit, torch, portable radio, spare batteries, food and water. The Territory Controller advises residents of Darwin and Rural Areas that if you DO NOT have accommodation constructed to the Building Code or are unsure of your present accommodation you should decide which public emergency shelter to use. You should now have your emergency kit complete and ready. DO NOT PROCEED TO PUBLIC EMERGENCY SHELTERS UNTIL ADVISED TO DO SO. Residents from the NT Border to Point Stuart are advised that now is the time to make final preparations to your home shelter or identify which public emergency shelter to use.
