NY Yankees Making a Push for Matt Kemp Yanks in Exile Brady 8 minutes ago Share on Facebook As the New York Yankees continue their search for a powerful bat to join the pinstripes, an interesting name has joined the fray: Matt Kemp. The Los Angeles Dodgers are openly shopping Kemp, as they have four star outfielders, and Kemp has been injury prone. And, according to the Boston Globe, the Yankees are joining their rivals, the Boston Red Sox (among a few other teams), in inquiring about Kemp’s superstar bat. The Latino Post, furthermore, is citing a reliable league source as saying that the Yankees are pushing hard for Kemp. Kemp is certainly a high-risk, high-reward player. He only played 73 games last year, and 106 the season before, and he still has six years left on a contract with an average yearly value of $20 million. That’s obviously the risk. But the reward is outstanding: Kemp has a career line of .293/.350/.493, with an OPS of .844, and an average of 26 home runs and 94 RBI per 162 games. And those numbers came down last year when he couldn’t get into a rhythm because of injuries . . . he’s only a few years removed from his 2011 season in which he hit .324/.399/.586 with a .986 OPS, 39 home runs, and 126 RBI. He also has two Golden Glove awards, though advanced statistics suggest that he’s actually a below average defender. Because the Dodgers are desperate to get rid of Kemp’s salary, reports suggest that they may be willing to eat some of the money, which could make him much more enticing. It’s unknown what the Dodgers want in return. Probably not much, as long as they can get rid of Kemp’s contract. And taking on his salary would probably mean no chance at signing Robinson Cano.
