NZ Bogger retires! In the early days of Newmonts underground Martha mine in New Zealand (100 years ago), horses were used to pull the ore carts. The horses spent their life underground, only coming to the surface at Christmas or when they were retired. One example of the modern version of the underground horse has just been retired and now will spend her days on the surface. ‘She’ is a 50 tonne underground loader, known to most people as a bogger, and will now spend her days on display in the main street of Waihi. After spending her working life underground and clocking up over 20,000 hours of operation Bogger 6014 has been put out to pasture – literally. The machine has been parked at the top of town below the Cornish Pumphouse. When the Gold Discovery Centre (currently under construction) is open to the public later this year the machine will form part of the display!
