Namibian golfers shine in Sanlam Cancer Challenge Despite having only a handful of golf courses, Namibia has upstaged some of the biggest clubs in South Africa with the money its golfers have raised for the 2013 Sanlam Cancer Challenge. The Namibian golfers have joined the hundreds of amateurs in South Africa who, since March, have competed in their various club competitions to help raise funds for the Cancer Association of South Africa (CANSA). Since its inception in 1993, the Sanlam Cancer Challenge has raised close to R30 million for CANSA to assist with cancer control programmes focussing on prevention, care and support. Windhoek Golf and Country Club was the top performer with a total of R34 840, followed by Oranjemund Golf Club with R34 200. Even Mariental Golf Club, which draws its members from a town of only 10 000 inhabitants, raised an incredible R26 600. At the end of this month, Namibian golfers will join their South African counterparts as they compete in the regional finals of the Sanlam Cancer Challenge with the aim of making it to the national finals at Sun City in October. There is also patient care and support in the form of 11 CANSA Care Homes for out-of-town cancer patients in the main metropolitan areas plus one hospitium (based in Polokwane) as well as two CANSA-TLC Lodges for paediatric oncology parents in Pretoria and Limpopo.
