Namibias Voter Registration Process In Shambles: RDP WINDHOEK, Jan 28 (Bernama) -- The Rally for Democracy and Progress (RDP) says the general voter registration which kicked off nearly two weeks ago is in shambles as a large number of people allegedly register without national identity documents. The partys Deputy Secretary for Information and Publicity, Nghiningilwandubo Kashume made the remarks in a media statement issued to Namibias Press Agency (Nampa) on Monday. He wanted to know what the purpose is of telling Namibian citizens to produce identity documents to register while some just walk in and register without the required documents. He said reports of such activities have come from the partys voter registration monitoring teams throughout the country. At Tsumeb in the Oshikoto Region, it is reported that the acting Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the towns municipality, Junias Jacob has been issuing people with a municipality letter stating that this person has been residing in Tsumeb for a period of 12 months, when the law requires you to display a municipal water or electricity account, he said. Approached for comment, Jacob did not deny claims by the RDP that he has been issuing people of that town with such letters, stating that he is acting on the request of Tsumeb Constituency Councillor Lebbius Tobias. He said the letters were issued to people who live in unproclaimed informal settlements such as Kuvukiland. Kashume further stated that at Eendadi da Michael Shafuda sha Haishi village in the Ohangwena Region, many people older than 45 years of age have allegedly been registering without producing national identity documents. These incidences are an indication of a total lack of procedural standards that the Electoral Commission of Namibia (ECN) and their cohorts are deliberately allowing just to benefit those who stand to benefit from such an exercise, he said. Kashume further indicated that nine eligible voters at a registration point in LUderitz in the Karas Region who registered on Jan 17, 2014, were allegedly all issued with cards which did not contain their signatures. How valid are unsigned voters cards? These are some of the irregularities which cause voter apathy amongst Namibian citizens, he said. -- BERNAMA
