National Defence Academy. #1 - NDA I was always in love with NDA since my childhood days. The never ending ragda, hardcore training, studying both science & non-science subjects irrespective of whether you were pursuing a B.A or B.Sc, standing and sleeping, most amazing food in the world, and meeting other hundred of boys who become your brothers for life, these were just a few aspects of the training days in the academy. But the day I visited NDA I lost my heart to it, such is its charm. I realized why Ex-NDAs can go on and on about their alma mater. The NDA campus is located about 17 km south-west of Pune city, north-west of Khadakwasla Lake. The site was chosen for being on a lake shore, the suitability of the neighboring hilly terrain, proximity to the Arabian Sea and other military establishments, an operational air base nearby at Lohegaon as well as the salubrious climate. The existence of an old combined-forces training centre and a disused mock landing ship, HMS Angostura, on the north bank of the Khadakwasla lake which had been used to train troops for amphibious landings, lent additional leverage for the selection of the site.Aptly, NDA is also located in the hunting grounds of the legendary Shivaji, with the Sinhagad Fort as a panoramic backdrop. Its the first tri-service academy in the world, where boys get trained together for three years before going to their respective academies depending on their choice of service; to ultimately join the Indian Army, Indian Air Force and the Indian Navy. Its motto is Service before Self. Selection & Eligibility Criteria : To get selected in NDA, one has to appear for the entrance exam conducted by UPSC after his 10 +2. Should be between 16.5 to 19.5 years of age. After clearing the written, one gets to attend the interviews known as SSB. After SSB, the medical have to be cleared and if everything goes well one gets shortlisted through the merit list. Academics & Training : At NDA, both academics and training go hand in hand. On reporting, the cadet is allotted one of the 18 squadrons, which becomes his home for the next 3 years. Usually a normal day will start with PT, followed by breakfast, then going for classes, breaking off for lunch, then games, followed by study period, and eventually going to bed at lights out, and yes! not to forget the punishments and ragda that keep taking place throughout the day (and night! ) NDA offers a full time 3 years Bachelors degree. B.A, B.Sc, or B.Cs (Bachelor of Computer Science) of Jawaharlal Nehru University. The academic year is divided in two terms, which means a total of 6 terms before he graduates from the academy. Facilities : NDA has an excellent infrastructure for all-round training of cadets and a vast array of facilities like spacious and well-maintained classrooms, well-equipped labs, two Olympic size swimming pools, a gymnasium, 32 football fields, 2 polo grounds, a cricket stadium and a number of squash and tennis courts. So if your soldier is an ex - NDA you know now where he comes from. If your kids are defence aspirants and havent passed or have just passed 10+2 , you know there is nothing better than NDA for them, and as they say....this is the place where boys turn into gentlemen. jai hind #kajal
