Native American Chronology 1904 The government began allotting lands to the Sioux in South Dakota. The government outlawed the Sun Dance among Plains Indians in clear violation if the First Amendment to the US Constitution. 1910 Over 30 reservations in the West were open to allotment and sale at the request of state congressional delegations. 1912 Apaches were used as workmen to build the Roosevelt Dam in Arizona. Chained at night so they wouldnt run away, the Apaches were the only workers capable of negotiating the narrow, mountainous routes into the dam site. The road from Phoenix to Roosevelt Dam is still called Apache Trail. 1917 Indians, who were still not allowed to vote in the US, were encouraged to enlist in the armed services. More than 10,000 Indians men enlisted. 1917 Peyote religion adopted by the Native American Church in Oklahoma. Peyote, an hallucinogen was incorporated as part of their religion to use as a right under constitutionally protected freedom of religion. Peyote meetings were intertribal conducted in English, and gave Indians a sense of identity with a larger pan-Indian community. Whites reacted in fear and alarm just as they had to the Ghost Dance in the 1889s. Native American History
