Never underestimate the power of peaceful waters. MASSIVE SUMMER TEACH IN (MSTI) FACEBOOK STREAM: https://facebook/pages/Opt-Out-Teach-In/164996763663958?ref=hl Teachers are wrapping up a long school year, or soon will be. They now have time to exhale, reflect and read. The degree to which educators oppose corporate reform is contested, but the percentage of teachers who would say the teaching profession and US public education are undergoing radical transformation would probably approach unanimity. This school year, teachers in the US got their first metallic taste of major elements of corporate reform. The MASSIVE SUMMER TEACH IN (MSTI) assumes that teachers are the best people to educate the general public about the transformation in process. Teachers have the most invested day to day, including their careers in many cases, as well as the most direct insight into what is really happening in schools. Teaching the public is what teachers do best. Thankfully, the overwhelming majority of educators feel love and protectiveness toward children and a duty to see upheld principles of equal opportunity, democratic change and inclusive, participatory decision-making. They may not be natural revolutionaries, but when their backs are up against the wall, we have already seen remarkable courage and peaceful ferocity in hundreds of teachers. For these reasons we can trust a loosely guided process calling upon teachers to spontaneously educate the general public in a MASSIVE SUMMER TEACH IN (MSTI). The MASSIVE SUMMER TEACH IN will take place everywhere, from the beach blanket to the Facebook stream, at Little League games and in home meetings, in blogs and on line at the supermarket. Not all teachers will agree about everything, a diversity of views will enrich the national conversation, but, if we can organize a critical mass of teachers and affiliated resistance groups provide support in the form of informational resources, activist tools, networking and coordination, it may be possible for a decentralized movement to grow extremely rapidly and foment widespread questioning of corporate education reform. That is the goal of the MASSIVE SUMMER TEACH IN. We will attempt to mobilize teachers to save their profession and public education in the United States.
