New Jersey Elks lodge #2563 is getting ready for Thanksgiving. In our lodge we dont gather as members and have dinner nor do we stay at home and enjoy dinner with our families. Instead some of us, mainly officers, bring turkeys and fixings to the lodge on thanksgiving day to serve dinner to the Coast Guard cadets from training center Cape May. These young people enjoy a homemade dinner (or as close to homemade without them being home), the chance to watch a football game on tv, but what means the most to them is when we all hand over our cell phones and let them call family or friends. This is a luxury they would not otherwise have during training. To the people that wonder why I would give up dinner with my own family and friends, you would have to see the look at a young person, away from home, when they realize they can call home and talk to their loved ones. We always receive a letter of appreciation from the Department of Defense but what I take pride in is the return calls in the following days from the moms and dads for giving their child the chance to call home.
