New Scientist this week reports that figures released by UN AIDS show that the annual number of new HIV infections in children has more than haloved since 2001 from 550,000 to 260,000. They also report that death rates are falling from a peak of 2.3 million in 2005 to 1.6 million last year. The reductions are ascribed to increases in the availability of ART with 61% of those eligible for it globally now receiving it. Other factors include scaled up programs to prevent mother to baby transmission and the increase of male circumcision programs in Africa.
