Mealista Island (Eilean Mhealasta) lies half a mile off the west coast of Lewis and has visible ruins of previous settlement, though there has been no permanent population since 1823, when the island was incorporated into a sheep farm. According to local legend, a boat from the island carrying a load of timber took shelter in southern Pairc in the late eighteenth century. The crew never returned and were supposed lost at sea. However several months later some blankets with unusual identification marks turned up for sale in Stornoway and the truth was exposed; the crew had been murdered for their cargo. There are a few places left on the trip to this mysterious place, see the Islands Book Trust website for more information.
