News from the Geiers: Dear Everyone, Please, find attached to this email a copy of our new study, Evaluation of Regression in Autism Spectrum Disorder Based on Parental Reports by Dr. Janet K. Kern, Mr. David A. Geier, and Dr. Mark R. Geier published in the peer-reviewed North American Journal of Medical Sciences saved as Published - Evaluation of Regression in ASD based upon Parental Reports1a.pdf in Adobe Acrobat Format. In this study, we described that an important of those with any autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis is that a significant number of children diagnosed with an ASD experience a developmental regression characterized by a loss of previously-acquired skills. Many parents report that their child was developmentally normal until sometime after birth, typically 15-24 months, at which time the child began to regress or deteriorate. The reported incidence of regression in autism varies in different studies from 15 to 62% of cases. In our new study, we reviewed developmental and medical information based upon parent reports of 135 children diagnosed with an ASD. It was observed that 39.25% of the children were delayed in development, 14.1% were delayed in development and regressed, and 46.7% regressed only. Thus, 82 children (60.7%) of the children were reported to have regressed in their development after birth. In regard to onset of symptoms, there was a significant difference between the delayed and regressed groups, as well as between the delayed and regression groups. The analyses showed that there was no significant relationship between age, gender, race, severity, or gastrointestinal symptoms and membership in the delayed, delayed and regressed, or regressed groups. The majority of parents reported that the regression was proceeded by or was associated with vaccinations (57.3%) or another medically related event (11.0%). In conclusion, our studys findings are consistent with previous research, and reinforce our understanding of regression in those children with an ASD diagnosis. Sincerely, Dr. Mark Geier David Geier
