Newton Police Seek Suspect in Kangaroo Express Robbery (WHKY) At 2:02 a.m. yesterday, the Newton Police Department responded to 334 East 20th Street in Newton in reference to a reported armed robbery at the Kangaroo Store No. 240. Upon arrival, Officers were told a black male entered the store and began calling for the store clerk. The clerk was in the cooler and heard the door buzzer. The clerk exited the cooler and encountered the suspect, who demanded the clerk open the register. The clerk gave the suspect approximately $35 from the register. The suspect then demanded the clerk give him the money from the safe. When the clerk could only provide approximately $60 from the safe, the suspect then demanded Newport cigarettes and was given approximately three packs. At that time, a witness who was walking to the store noticed the robbery from outside through the glass doors but did not have a phone to call Police. The suspect saw the witness outside and briefly pointed his gun toward the witness. The suspect forced the clerk to lay on the floor behind the counter as he exited the store on foot, running west. The witness sustained a minor cut when he encountered the suspect fleeing the scene. The suspect was described as a light skinned, black male. He was wearing a dark colored shirt, long blue jean shorts, black tennis shoes, sunglasses, something black covering his face and black gloves with skeletal bones on the back. He was armed with a black pistol. Anyone with information regarding the robbery or the suspect should call Newton Police at 828-465-7430.
