Next week will mark the 20th anniversary of my first CD release. Its damn near unbelievable that after all that time Im still doing this... For a disillusioned 80s Metal freak like myself the early 90s were a pretty rough time. All the good bands were gone or had wimped out to finally find acceptance on a wider scale and the Death Metal that arose in 1989 had fallen into rather forseeable patterns by 1992. What was an extreme Metal fan to do but cling on to the few bands of note that were belched up along all the cookie cutter Death Metal...? So I did and albums like Worship Him, Rites Of The Black Mass, Ritual or A Blaze In The Northern Sky were new compass points on my horizon and so SAMAEL ended up playing my 26th birthday party in Regensburg in July 1993. Looking for suitable local openers I quickly got in contact with (somewhat) local bands like UNGOD from Schweinfurt and DAWNFALL from München and when, just 3 weeks later, Euronymous was killed and DEATHLIKE SILENCE fell silent, I decided to start a label myself. Things were a lot more complex and expensive back then but with the help of Volker Schwechheimer (Merciless Records) and Ted Vremann (Cyber Music) and a whole lot of optimism I managed to eventually overcome all obstacles and on July 1st 1994 Dominance Of Darkness was unleashed upon a terrified World that would never be the same. The recording was primitive, the sound bestial and their songwriting and playing abilities were crude at best but somehow this recording is magical to some (including me). There were some CD reviews when it came out and they were usually ranging from horrified disbelief to outright amusement. Unfortunately I dont have any of those left to post...
