Nicholas Kristof Bahrain, a particularly prosperous, well-educated and repressive US ally in the Middle East, has just released from prison Zainab al-Khawaja, a young woman who has tried to apply the lessons of Mandela to her country. Because shes very savvy about organizing peaceful resistance, the government arrested her, and she still faces other charges. The US has ignored the Shiite majority in Bahrain, hunkering down with the king, in ways that put us on the wrong side of history and that make further violence likely. I hope that now that Zainab is free from prison, the US Embassy will reach out to her: If we learned anything from Mandela, it should be the need to communicate with leaders of repressed majorities even before they become president.
