Nigerian Navy pledges collaboration with NOC on sports devt. The Chief of Naval Staff, Vice-Adm. Usman Jubril on Tuesday in Abuja pledged the support of the Nigerian Navy for the sports development initiatives of the Nigeria Olympics Committee (NOC). Jubril made the pledge during his investiture as a patron of the committee’s ``One Service, One Medal’’ project (OSOM) by NOC members. The project is part of NOC’s preparations for the Rio 2016 Olympic Games. The Chief of Naval Staff said the Navy would support the project so as to ensure that Nigerian athletes vie for all available medals and make the country proud. ``We will by commitment develop and support OSOM to the end. ``This we can start by looking at where we have comparative advantage and build on it, train on it and expose our athletes to outside competitions so that they can develop and compete with their peers outside of this country,’’ he said. Jubril said further that the Nigerian Navy’s commitment had hitherto been by sponsoring competitions in swimming, which is a requisite for all its personnel. He recalled that a Naval personnel won the first Olympic Games medal for Nigeria at the Tokyo Olympics in 1964. The Chief of Naval Staff said Nigerian Navy personnel had ever since then been proving their mettle in other competitions. Jubril assured the NOC that the Navy would seize the opportunity of the investiture to strive towards winning more laurels for the country, thanking the members for the honour. ``During recruitment we will look out for talents and we will develop them along the line of their becoming very good in sporting activities,’’ he said. Earlier, the NOC President, Sani Ndanusa, had said the committee came to solicit the support of the Nigerian Navy towards sports development. Ndanusa said a considerable percentage of medalists produced by Nigeria at past national and international events, Olympic and Commonwealth Games had come from the military and para-military outfits.
