Nigeria’s Food Production On The Increase. The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, disclosed that Nigeria recorded a growth in the production of food by 8 million metric tonnes between 2012,2013 and 2014. Speaking at the International Conference Centre, University of Ibadan, UI, the minister said that, the 8 million metric tonnes, “represents over 70 per cent growth of the target set for 2015 by the government.” Adesina in describing the importance of this achievement said, “it marks yet another major milestone in our drive to modernize agriculture and ensure that our farmers who should be the real beneficiaries of government policies are well targeted by government programmes.” He commended the Nigerian Institute of Animal Science, NIAS, and the Animal Science Association for driving the issue of livestock value addition. The Vice-Chancellor, UI, Isaac Folorunso Adewole, in his goodwill message, charged the new council of NIAS, to be aware of their responsibilities and work hard to ensure food security for the country.
