Nigger: A forbidden word. In Miami, many Latino immigrants who suffer from racial discrimination do not pronounce the word "negro" in front of black people. "They know the word in spanish”, some say with certain resentment, “And get upset”. For that reason, they prefer to use words like "The Germans" when referring to blacks in public or practice the odious habit of rubbing the index on the forearm to refer to black skin. Indeed, it is possible for a black American in Miami to confuse the pronunciation of "negro", said in Spanish, with the word "Nigger", which is the most offensive term that exists in the U.S. against the African descendant population. (Although, we all came from Africa, worth clarifying). Apparently, the origin of the word "Nigger" comes precisely from the mispronunciation of the Spanish "Negro" or the French "Nègre" during the time of slavery. And even though the word has been used by whites in an openly, contemptuous way from those times until the middle of the 20th century, in the early sixties its use began to change as the Black American population earned civil rights. Today, blacks in North America have incorporated the word "Nigger" to their vernacular vocabulary ("Ebonics”) and use it with different tones according to the conversation. For example, a black person can say to another: "You are my nigger". Thus, considering him a good friend. But "Nigger" can also be discriminatory among blacks themselves when it is used to argue that a person is lazy, with no education and dedicated to committing crimes. However, the rest of the population in the United States is not allowed to use this word unless they venture to take a beating or a hard time. As the word "Nigger" carries a heavy discriminatory burden and its use is restricted to black people it has been replaced in the official English language by "The N Word". The 400 years of slavery against Blacks have left an almost indelible impression on humanity which will take long time to vanish. The damage is already done. Now it is a matter of repair it little by little by the elimination of racism.
