Nirash karr Gia Australian Sikh association da Ijlas What Happened in ASA general body meeting should be a matter of concern for every member of ASA. There are a few individuals who have written on this, Mr. Prabjot singh Sandhu and harkirat Singh Sandhar are among them. Some questions have been raised but there are other matters which were not touched in their writings. First of all, I am thankful to people like Gurdarshan Singh Dhaliwal and his team members who played a very good role in conducting ASA in this years. Mr Dhaliwal had a death happened in family but he still conducted this seva with zeal. He raised questions of someone questioning his integrity in media for which Prabhjot Singh apologised. I think we must not guess someone’s behaviour without even talking with him. This is poor journalism. I also think this was not a big issue, Mr. Dhaliwal should have shown some tolerance. People do think about others particularly when they have interest in that matter. It is normal that a man selected by committee can be accused of favouring the committee. It happened previously too but did not go in writing. So far I have known two persons Mr. Dhanwant Singh and Mr. Gurdarshan Singh Dhaliwal both in spite of volatile situation did good job and improved the system. Every year they made recommendations and their recommendations were implemented or at least been given respect. Now as soon as Mr. Dhaliwal made his recommendations, the people who were not happy started making noise. Most of them were blaming the committee which was conducting AGM. Committee had no role in these recommendations and should not been targeted. Now he did not declare result of president’s election and recommended members to make a committee but due to noise and other issues no committee was formed in ASA. Now let us discuss the scenario, a member lodged an objection on qualification of one candidate and the candidate failed to give satisfactory reply, so what could he do? We all know that if someone gets a job with wrong certificate regarding his qualification even after ten years if that is found by authorities, he/she is dismissed, not only by court but also by concerned department. Secondly had this condition been known before the rejection date for nominations, his papers would have surely been rejected. Other group would not have taken a risk. Two years never meant AGM to AGM, it was always two calendar years. If other clubs have different definition of year, that has no link with ASA. Some countries would have less or more number of days in their traditional years. ASA does not have groups, so groups cannot make their decisions. This happened previously where decisions taken by consensus of AGM were challenged by a member due to not receiving 21 days’ notice. Ideally this decision can only be done by AGM with ¾ majority of members. It is constitutional anomaly, otherwise what special duty president does which requires two years’ experience. Missed opportunity to get permission for money Unfortunately ASA AGM was cancelled due to indiscipline by the members. We missed too many things, which include permission to spend money to buy property. Last year ASA had missed very good opportunity to buy land in Riverstone for this reason. Opportunities will again come but our selfish interests will ruin this. Missed opportunity to form committee for constitution ASA missed opportunity to form committee on forthcoming constitution. There was good and meaningful discussion on constitution in AGM but due to uproar in the house this committee was not formed. Another missed opportunity was to form a committee as recommended by presiding officer to elect president. Cover football players I have noticed that there are only a few individuals who create problems. Most among these are not able to give good and meaningful arguments in a discussion. Like a soccer match, these individuals should be marked and covered. I think family members of these can play major role. One person should be sitting next to you to stop them getting up. Sometimes even family members become emotional and behaving like these marked people, family members must control their emotions. Tolerance and politeness are the virtues. Tone of the voice can be kept as low as possible. There might be some individuals who can be antisikh and whose agenda is to create problems. These should be identified and banned from ASA. School should be independent ASA has grown into a big organisation. Bigger organisations are hard to control and when we have volatile situation like this, everyone tries to become boss and mistrust goes on. It is time to make it small. School should have its independent management. Its committee should be elected independently. Someone who is member of executive committee in school, should not be member of other committees in ASA Spend money on drug control in Punjab All of us know that drug epidemic is a problem in Punjab. Nearly all of us have relatives in Punjab, so ASA being the biggest body of Sikhs in Australia, should play its role in fighting this epidemic. It should encourage orgainsations like Pingalwara to dedicate staff in this direction. ASA is already sending money to Pingalwara, additional money should be sent for this purpose. For this ASA need to register itself with federal government Maryada issue Some people make big issue of Maryada, others do not care. It can be solved using people oriented staff and common sense. A committee can be formed which can take advantage of Sikh rehat Maryada and come with the desired result. Maryada is day to day dealing like how to behave in langar, how to sit in guru darbar, how to do much vaak, what are the protocols for path, how amrit is initiated etc. this issue can easily be solved. Sikh grammar school Some of the members tried to bring name of Sikh grammar school in the AGM of ASA which has no link. Sikh grammar school is an independent body and they have not even sought any help from ASA. A stupid argument of secret constitution is often raised. It is a registered organisation with department of fair trading and with a small fee any registered organisation’s constitution can be obtained from fair trading department. Also its constitution is available on its website. These people need appreciation for this, instead many people are blindly opposing them due to foolish reasons.
