Nish Jairazbhoy s painting, Widow, touched me deeply, as I know it did many. I felt I wanted to commemorate her achievement with a tribute poem: The Widow Blackness rules the widows world. She stands whitely against the dark, Her tears bleed red, all sorrows Etched into her porcelain skin. Pain closes her eyes, Possibilities open them. Loss upon loss The weight of lonely days Written in her face, now downcast, Now humbled by days ahead Of vast and empty solitude. For these she weeps silently. Yet in the quiet night The open eyes see alternate Scenarios, see the soul heal, Know she strides forward, Bloody but no longer broken.
