Niue voters return 18 of 20 MPs to parliament In Niue’s general elections last night, the people voted unanimously for more of the same. Provisional results show eighteen of its 20-member parliament returning for another term. Only one member, Tulelehemaama Tongia from the village of Makefu, lost his seat. While a tie in the village of Toi may see one other change. The electoral officer will do a final count today. If there is still a tie in the village of Toi, under the Niue Constitution, a winner will be found through a draw from a hat. Officials at the Justice department last night told the Niue Star they do not envisage any changes in the final count as the margins are fairly significant. The interest now turns to who will lead the country. Over the next week or two, the twenty MPs will have as their first duty, a vote to decide who the next Premier will be to lead in this 40th year since Niue became a sovereign nation in 1974. There is confidence Toke Talagi will return for a third term, although likely challenges will include former two time Premier Young Vivian who managed to stave off the challenge of Michael Jackson by three votes at the Hakupu electorate. RESULTS COMMON ROLL: All six incumbents return. Stan Kalauni (450), Toke Talagi (439), Crossley Tatui (397), Togia Sioneholo (349), Terry Coe (340), Joan Viliamu (328). VILLAGE SEATS: Alofi South: Dalton Tagelagi; Tamakautoga: Peter Funaki; Hakupu Young Vivian; Mutalau: Bill Motufoou; Hikutavaki: Opili Talafasi; Tuapa: Fisa Pihigia; Makefu: Tofua Puletama; Toi Tie between Dion Taufitu and Moka Vaha.
