North West Surgical Trials Centre Launch Event Friday 20th September 2013: Haydock Park, Newton-le-Willows 10.00am – 4.30pm Dear Colleague, The Royal College of Surgeons of England has recently launched a series of Surgical Trials Centres to develop surgical/clinical research. Here at the North West Surgical Trials centre we are planning to hold our launch event on the 20th September 2013 and ours will be the first Surgical Trials Centre launch in the UK of the four appointed centres. We intend to have an all-day meeting from 10am-4.30pm followed by an informal gathering at Haydock Park racecourse just off the M6, to launch clinical trials in a whole range of surgical specialties. We would like to extend an invitation to the event to yourself any surgical colleague’s that you feel may have an interest in the North West Surgical Trials Centre. The general programme for the event is as follows with some speakers to be confirmed: 10.00am Welcome and Introduction Professor Nigel Bundred, Director of the NWSTC 10.10am Update on Surgical Trials Units Dion Morton, Professor of Surgery, University of Birmingham 10.20am About the HTA and the NIHR Andrew Cook, Consultant in Public Health Medicine and Fellow in Health Technology Assessment 10.40am Trials that Involve the Testing of New Devices for Surgeons Brian Davidson, Professor of Surgery, University College London 11.00am Refreshments break 11.30pm Methodology and Challenges for Surgical Trials TBC 11.50am Surgical Specialty Leads including Matt Costa and Peter Hutchinson 12.10pm Surgical Trainee Collaborative representatives from Liverpool and Manchester 12.30pm Break for lunch and Poster Judging Competition for Trainee’s 2.00pm Break off into CSG groups for discussions 3.30pm Refreshments break 4.00pm Closing speech: The Importance of Surgeons Participating in Clinical Trials Norman Williams, President of the Royal College of Surgeons 4.30pm Drinks and pizza At lunch time there will be a poster competition for trainee’s, if you would like to submit an abstract on a research project please do so in no more than 200 words in the outline as below: • Title • Authors • Background • Aims • Methods • Results • Conclusion This will need to be emailed to Jenna on [email protected] by the 31st August 2013, there will be prizes awarded on the day.
