Not even close to Inocybe. Wrong color, size, shape, spore color - TopicsExpress

Not even close to Inocybe. Wrong color, size, shape, spore color and habitat. Definitely Agaricus, but which one? Need to know about any staining when cut or bruised, and does it smell phenolic or like anise? (Note that some people are unable to detect the phenolic smell) Here is an excerpt from a recent post by David Rust on BAMS about another Agaricus ID request. ------------------------------- Most often you will find Agaricus in California are one of two or three toxic types: Agaricus xanthodermus, A. californicus, or A. hondensis. These all have a distinctive phenolic smell (nail polish remover or library paste). Caution: not everyone has the ability to smell phenol well. Heres a good starter page: mushroomexpert/agaricus.html Fred Stevens has done a marvelous key to identifying Agarics: mykoweb/CAF/keys/Agaricus_key.pdf but you should have these identified by someone who knows them before even thinking about edibility. --------------------------------------------------
