Not only is lying Haraam in the Sharee`ah, but it was also - TopicsExpress

Not only is lying Haraam in the Sharee`ah, but it was also considered as something bad even by the Mushriks of Makkah in the Jaahiliyyah. Their leaders would fear of being labeled as liars, so what about the Muslims? In the long Hadeeth of Abu Sufyan he said: Heraclius said, Bring him (Abu Sufyaan) close to me and make his companions stand behind him. Abu Sufyaan added, Heraclius told his translator to tell my companions that he wanted to put some questions to me regarding that man (The Prophet) and that if I told a lie they (my companions) should contradict me. Abu Sufyaan added, BY ALLAAH! HAD I NOT BEEN AFRAID OF MY COMPANIONS LABELING ME A LIAR, I WOULD NOT HAVE SPOKEN THE TRUTH ABOUT THE PROPHET.” [Saheeh al-Bukhaaree and Saheeh Muslim] Lying is considered among the worst characteristics, Allaah تعالى made it Haraam and has warned against it; and the above narration is a witness to that. If the Mushriks in the Jaahiliyyah saw that lying was detestable and that it left a mark against a person’s dignity and that he would be maligned because of it; then we ask: “HOW CAN A MUSLIM EVEN THINK ABOUT LYING WHEN HE HAS BEEN COMMANDED TO BE UPON THE BEST OF CHARACTER?” [Adopted from Fiqh al-Da`wah fee Saheeh al-Imaam al-Bukhaaree]
