Not surprisingly, the editor of the St. Cloud Times shifts the responsibility of the problems at Mille Lacs on to the tribe. Using passive-aggressiveness, Krebs deftly inserts the anti-sovereignist credo and implies that netting is the culprit for the so-called walleye crash. And, of course, there is the implication that reserved treaty rights has led to irresponsible resource protection by the Mille Lacs Band. Krebs column does nothing to help resolve the differences between chimookamaanag anglers and tribal anglers. Rather, it creates animosity by chimookamaanag sport fishing anglers toward the tribal populace. Unlike Krebs who lives two hours away, I happen to live at Mille Lacs. I find that people here are courteous and friendly regardless if one is Native or non-Native. This isnt to say that racism here doesnt exist. But the racism is largely a product of non-resident anglers from the Twin Cities and other smaller cities who travel to Mille Lacs to fish. Im sure that Bud Grant and his anti-sovereignist group, PERM, feel vindicated by Krebs editorial. But stirring the embers of racism doesnt resolve anything and it doesnt change the law of the land established by the Supreme Court in 1999.
