Nothing all that exciting to report today. We reduced the number - TopicsExpress

Nothing all that exciting to report today. We reduced the number of big antibiotics he was on. We were able to get a KUB (abdominal x-ray) and determined that everything looked fine in his belly. Right now, our surgeon feels like his gut just needs to more time. Fluids in the intestinal tract take the path of least resistance, which is to turn around and go out of his g-tube right now. This is because his intestines are still healing and not ready to work properly enough to move things through. So, we wait. They told us this morning that it could take up to 4 weeks for things to start working....Certainly not the news we wanted to hear. (Not that it was news to us, necessarily. We always know thats a possibility but he usually does much better than that.) If for some reason, things were still not working at 4 weeks post-op, then he would need another surgery, but we would not be able to do that until 6 weeks post-op. We are unsure how the logistics of that would work out, but we are praying very hard that it doesnt come to that. In my heart of hearts, I really dont believe that it is going to require another surgery like that. I just think he needs more time...maybe another week or so... and maybe then he will be ready to start eating. We are looking at being home closer to just before Thanksgiving now, though, I think. Since this whole trip was completely a surprise to us, you can imagine what this is going to mean financially. I am trying to get us out of the hotel and into the family housing program here at Childrens, but they have been full. We are praying for an opening, as that would save us a tremendous amount of money. The thought of staying here even longer than the 3 weeks we anticipated is not fun at all.... Of course, it is worth it, but we certainly look forward to the light at the end of the tunnel. Thanks for praying... Well keep you posted as we go.
