Adam grew up in England but was of Romani descent (an ethnicity of Indian origin living in Europe and America widely known by the exonym “gypsies”). When Adam was a kid, his mother was a domestic cleaner for Sir Paul McCartney. In college, Adam developed anorexia and eventually was hospitalized. Upon his release he became Adam Ant. The first version of Adam and the Ants split with the Ants leaving to form Bow Wow Wow. The next version of Adam and the Ants was formed and released an enormously popular album in the summer of 1980 and Antmania ensued and put the band at the forefront of the New Romantic Movement. This version of the band split and one of the members subsequently produced many of the hits for Tears for Fears. Ant had a few hits but fast forward 20 years later and the years between 2001 and 2009 were not kind to him. He had incidents with the law and psychiatric issues and had to receive court ordered in-patient psychiatric care. He still performs.
