November 12, 1977 - 37 Years Ago Today: Billy Joel debuted at No. 89 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with his single, Just The Way You Are. This was Joels 5th entry on the Hot 100 and his lead-off single from his breakthrough studio album, The Stranger. The single peaked at No. 3 on February 18, 1978 and was the first of four Top 25 hit singles from the album. It was followed by Movin Out (Anthonys Song) which peaked at No. 17, Only The Good Die You which reached No. 24, and finally, the moving ballad, Shes Always A Woman which climbed to No. 17. Just The Way You Are came thisclose to not being included on the album, but while in the studio recording the song, Linda Ronstadt and Phoebe Snow (who were also recording in the same building at the time) stopped by and Joel confessed to the two songbirds that he felt Just The Way You Are was too much of a chick song and didnt feel comfortable including it. According to Ronstadt, she told Joel he must include it because it was such a great song. He listened to her opinion and the single ended up being a turning point in Joels career, becoming his first single in the Top Ten and earning him Grammys for Record of the Year and Song of the Year. It was eventually inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame and the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and also enjoyed a four-week run at No. 1 on the Billboard AC chart.
