November 21, 1970 - 44 Years Ago Today: The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band debuted at No. 92 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with their single, Mr. Bojangles. This was the country-rock bands second appearance on the Hot 100 and their first to crack the Top 40. It became a Top Ten hit reaching No. 9 on February 20, 1971. Although they charted 11 singles on the Hot 100 between 1967-1981, they scored only 3 Top 40s. They had bigger success on the Billboard Country Singles chart where they scored 32 hits between 1971-1999. This recording of Mr. Bojangles was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.
