OCTOBER 9, 2013 FISHING REPORTS COURTESY OF TENNESSEE WILDLIFE RESOURCES AGENCY Caney Fork: Fishing is good. Several rainbows and brooks are being caught from the dam to Kirby Lane on flies in periods of no flow. In periods of blows, some good brown trout are being caught on jerkbaits and shad near the dam. Center Hill: Fishing is fair. Water temperature is 74; lake is stable. Bass are being caught on topwater baits while fishing close to shore in the creeks. A few crappie are being caught in sunken brushpiles in 15-to-20 feet of water on minnows. A few walleye are being caught while trolling nightcrawlers on flats in 27 feet of water. Chickamauga Reservoir: The lake is falling according to schedule. The surface elevation on 9/05/13 was 681.1 feet and this elevation was .9 feet below summer mean. The surface water temperature was 74 degrees. Bass anglers caught plenty of fish over the weekend. Most bass were caught by those fishing grass beds with topwater weedless lures such as rats or frogs. A bass weighing more than 9 pounds was weighed at a tournament coming out of Dayton. Crappie anglers have caught plenty of fish around docks, bridges, ledges and brush in the large secondary areas and primary locations. Minnows or jigs have been the most used enticers. Striped bass have been caught by those using shad, jigs, swimbaits, and spoons. Current has been a factor that makes or breaks a fishing trip. Catfish anglers have caught fish while drifting in the main channel. A large number of catfish have moved into the large water creeks. Most popular baits associated with catching catfish have been used. Bluegill have been caught by many anglers. Rocky banks, bluffs, sunken islands and river bends have been targeted by those in pursuit of bluegill. Worms or crickets remain the favorite bait. Dale Hollow: Fishing is fair. Water temperature is 72; lake is slowly falling. A few largemouth are being caught in the rivers while fishing crankbaits and spinnerbaits around shallow cover. Crappie fishing is fair in the rivers while fishing minnows and laydown trees and brushpiles in 20 feet of water. Hiwassee River near Reliance: The river surface water temperature has been averaging around 64 degrees. Trout anglers have had total number catches lower this past week than in previous weeks. Corn, worms, spinner-type lures, and flies have been used for bait. Some heavy smallmouth have been caught by a couple of local anglers. Most anglers are focused on the upcoming cooler months. Parksville Lake: The boat ramps, controlled by the Forest Service, are currently closed due to the federal government shutdown. Watts Bar Reservoir: The surface water temperature has averaged around 74 degrees. The surface elevation on Sunday was 740.6 feet. This elevation was summer normal. Crappie anglers have caught greater numbers of fish this past week. Most have been caught around ledges, brush, and bluffs in deeper secondary locations. Jigs or minnows have been used for bait by all anglers. Catfish drifters in the middle reservoir have had the greater success of catching quantity and quality of catfish on many of the old favorite catfish baits. Main lake areas seem to be the better area to target, however many catfish have moved into secondary locations. Bass anglers have caught bass along deeper secondary areas while using jigs, worms, crankbaits and spinnerbaits. Some topwater fish have been caught later in the evening around areas where baitfish have been found. Striped bass anglers have caught many tailwater fish while using shad for bait. Current will increase the odds of having a good trip. Bluff walls and boat docks have been areas where bluegill were caught by those using worms or crickets.
