OK Facebook, this is what is on my mind. I am getting ready to go to the Illinois Great Rivers Conference in Peoria. It is very convenient for us in Elmwood that it is in Peoria. The United Methodist Church is not a liberal church, nor a conservative church. It is a church inviting people to join with the Holy Spirit in doing good in this world. At conference there will be people from all parts of the state of Illinois, south of Interstate 80. People from all over the world will come. A great mission is in Liberia we have done many things in a country about the same size as our conference. I was most irritated by some one with a narrow minded and colloquial viewpoint taking a broad generalized sweeping attack at our church conference. Sometimes people try to make straw men by ascribing the desires of a few to a global organization. We as a church do face social crisis from time to time, the United Methodist church is an American religion. Our church divided over slavery just as the country, some think gender equality will split us again. I do not know I have seen few social movements move public opinion faster. Delegates from local churches are just like you, who live in central and southern Illinois, people of many different minds. It has become fashionable to attack that big government or an organization as something you are not a part of, but whether it is state or federal government, the larger church, it is essentially you or us. As Pogo so eloquently stated we have met the enemy and it is us.
