OK ~all you Western Film afficianados out there! Here is my Western Film Trivia game I developed for Robert Doc Boyles Old West blog website: ( trivia game ~copyright Daniel OConnells Hyacinth House Productions) (Answers immediately follow each question, so dont jump ahead pardners! lol) #1) Which major Western featured a broom-handled Mauser pistol? ******Ans: Director John Sturges Joe Kidd (1972) starring Clint Eastwood, Robert Duval and John Saxon. From a story by Elmore Leonard, bad man Don Stroud introduces the “C96” German pistol to “stave-in” Clint but leave it to our hero to purloin the weapon and reverse the charges. In real life, the C96 “broom-handle” was favored by Winston Churchill and Lawrence of Arabia. #2) Name the Kirk Douglas Western where he “shows-off” his gun spinning prowess? ******Ans: Director King Vidors Man Without a Star (1955) starring Douglas, Jeanne Crain, Claire Trevor and William Campbell. Campbell plays the handsome, young side-kick to the cowboyin’ veteran Douglas and Kirk teaches him all the ropes, including the now familiar shooting advise; take your time and aim, don’t get fancy! Incidentally, the title had nothing to do with marshals, sheriffs or lawmen. #3) Name the 1950s John Ford Western that featured silent screen Western star, Hoot Gibson in a very minor role? ******Ans: The Horse Soldiers (1959) starring John Wayne, William Holden and Constance Towers. Director John Ford was an old friend to silent film star Gibson and cast him as Sgt. Brown and gave him a couple of lines. Gibson, a former rodeo star, was famous in films for almost never using his six gun to defeat the bad guys. In 1925 he was pulling in $14,500 a week in horse operas. Unfortunately, he spent it as fast as he made it. #4) At the end of John Fords The Searchers when John Wayne is framed in the doorway and walks away from the camera, who is he honoring? ******Ans: His favorite childhood movie star, and later real life friend Harry Carey Sr. #5) Which classic 1960’s Hollywood Western featured the then young German heart throb, with the initials H.B.? ******Ans: (again) Director John Sturges The Magnificent Seven (1960) featured a young German import, Horst Buchholz, who along with his six hired gun pals, reduces Eli Wallachs band of banditos to minced-frijoles! #6) What was the name of the Audie Murphy Western in which he teaches a group of women how to shoot? ******Ans: Director George Marshalls The Guns of Fort Petticoat (1957) starring Murphy, Kathryn Grant, Hope Emerson and Jeanette Nolan, Audie must defend the frontier against marauding Indians with a passel of lovely ladies whose menfolk are away fighting for the Confederacy! One slight problem, Murphy was in the Union and nobody trusts him. #7) The famous star of the 1950s TV show Seahunt and the jet age spoofs Hot Shots & Hot Shots, Part Deux was in a classic Western. Can you name him and it? ******Ans: Director Fred Zinnemanns High Noon (1952) starring Gary Cooper, Grace Kelly, Katy Jurado and Thomas Mitchell, it also featured none other than Lloyd Bridges as yellow-tinged, Deputy Marshal Harvey Pell who joins the long list of townsfolk who refuse to help Cooper. Maybe if he had a spear~gun? #8) Which Western, when he read the script, did John Wayne say, Naw, I cant do a movie like that, but Ill be first in line to see it! ******Ans: Director Mel Brooks Blazing Saddles (1974) starring Cleavon Little, Gene Wilder, Harvey Korman, Slim Pickens and Madeline Kahn. I guess getting the Duke to play in a Mel Brooks comedy spoof was like asking Ray Charles to drive you to the airport. Ain’t gonna’ happen. #9) Name the film that is considered a “loving tribute” of George Stevens 1953 classic Western, Shane ******Ans: Director Clint Eastwoods Pale Rider (1985) starring Eastwood, Michael Moriarty, Carrie Snodgress, and Chris Penn. It was bound to happen, Clint’s “no name” type heroes are all similar to the man in buckskin, the mysterious stranger, Shane, who ‘falls to earth’ and saves the day. #10) Were not gonna get rid of anybody! Were gonna stick together, just like it used to be! When you side with a man, you stay with him! And if you cant do that, youre like some animal, youre finished! Were finished! All of us! Who said it and what film? ******Ans: Sam Peckinpahs The Wild Bunch (1969) starring William Holden, Ernest Borgnine and Robert Ryan. Holden plays leader gang leader Bishop Pike and utters that classic diatribe to his faltering array of misfit mercenaries. Considered by many to be the quintessential Western, some say it was is greatest movie ever made. (BTW The Wild Bunch is Ramblin Jacks NUMBER ONE TOP WESTERN OF ALL TIME)
