OK, so Im NOT actually losing my mind..... Driving home from a rehearsal tonight, I caught the absolute very beginning of the Strauss Four Last Songs on WWFM. The announcer had already revealed the soprano soloist, and I missed it.... I thought (even with my quite limited knowledge of sopranos), Lets see if I can figure out who the soloist is. (After all, it takes a certain type of voice to sing the Four Last Songs, limiting the field.) The playing from the orchestra was superb (had missed the announcement of the orchestra as well), and then she began. I nearly drove off the road. Full-throated, connected singing, very much on-pitch, and fairly clear German. As I listened, I thought, Thats Jessye Norman. But it cant be. Shes not singing in public anymore. And theres coughing and audience noises in the background - this is a LIVE performance. She sounds FANTASTIC, but that cant be her. There must be some new singer on the scene who sounds JUST LIKE HER. I sat in my driveway for about 10 minutes listening, revelling, and waiting for the announcement. Jessye Norman. Pittsburgh Symphony. Charles Dutoit. How is this possible? Accessing the website, I saw that this was an archived performance (no date given). Thank God for performances like these. We all need them!
