OK this is a photo that is well known, it has been printed in a few of the books from the museum over the years, most all local history buffs know this photo. We have always had a full size crystal clear copy of it, it is obviously an 8 x 10 glass plate photo which is why the quality is so good. When you have a negative this large it is amazing what you can do with a scanner when you zoom at 2,400 dpi which is what I did with this photo. I am going to post several zooms of it in a minute... On the back of the photo, in Karl H Starkweathers hand writing states: Downtown Plymouth (Mich) scene in 1871. So I will give you a bit of background on the photo before I show you the zoomed in scans. Because of a high resolution scanner I was able a few years ago to have pin pointed the month to July of that year, in the following scans. The store in this photo is George A. Starkweather’s store in downtown Plymouth. George had a store in downtown Plymouth for several years prior to relocating the business to old village. The downtown store he owned and ran with his business partner Mr Hall. When he moved his store to old village, he then ran the new store on his own. The relocated store on Liberty Street - after it left the Starkweather - Hilllmer family, was used for several other businesses over the years, including a hardware store and an antique store. Presently it is now known as Hermanns Olde Town Grille. They have great food and spirits and I often visit there with family including my Nephew Brandon, his favorite hang out in town! The reason for the store relocation was to establish a business district in the old Village area of Plymouth, in anticipation of the railroad coming to Plymouth that same year. By the way, if you believe that what I have posted the past week is enough justification to list Old Village Plymouth Mi on the National Register of Historic Places to help preserve it for all time, click my like button for a show of support…
