OMG! TIS the roller rink I grew up with, from the 80s into the 90s! We didnt have enough money to come regularlly but when I was there...it was...*Dude* I cant really describe it. All off my senses, including my imagination and empathics were just kept full and delighted. Ofcourse everyone around me was excited and happy-and forgot to ostrcize me for a while. I was happy to finally learn to skate enough to fit in for a while, to teaching myself to have fun to the music. Here I wasnt the weirdo-I was just another girl trying to have fun. There were times that the rhythm, motion, and movement (including the whipping air) would spark my imagination-and suddenly I was in one of my different worlds. Maybe champion figure skater winning a medal and the love of some cute guy who had noticed me before, to an undiscovered star with enough fluidity and grace to star in her own music video, to some dynamic super (or super-barbaric) heroine that swoops in and saves the day-hey it was the 80s-and everything in between. I also got to geek out here. Honing my skills on both Golden Axe I & II, as spare quarters allowed. And when they didnt Id walk up and down the rows of games. Sometimes studying other players, sometimes checking slots for forgotten quarters, sometimes-even having the guts-to straight ask other people for spare change-much to my Mothers chagrin. I always had a wistful envy of my peers that could afford things like food and slushies from the concession stand, or a birthday party at the roller rink. And especially those that were there before us and got to stay longer-and the gamers I saw that could afford to just stand there and play (for what seemed like to me to be forever) But none of this was enough to squelch my joy of being able to go when I could. And every once in a while, when Mom wasnt looking, someone would slip me a couple of extras quarters. Just enough to play 3 more games and buy a grape juice box from the vending machine. And to me that was beyond Âûsome...it was epic.
